Chip maker Intel plans to start deployment of its low-cost Classmate PCs in schools in India this month.

The company has so far done pilot projects of its one-to-one computing project in five schools in the country. Intel also plans to introduce its second-generation Classmate PCs in India soon.

Classmate PCs are small, rugged laptops developed to impart education to school children. They are similar to One-Laptop-Per-Child’s XO laptops. “We started Classmate PC pilots in India one-and-a-half year ago. The ecosystem comprising of content partners, schools and hardware makers requires time to develop.
